Join us for our November 3rd General Meeting and Happy hour where we will have guests from the HARBOR SEAL PROJECT be our featured speakers.

The guest speakers for November will be Will Greco, Emma Suchowski & Karen Baker.

In summer of 2024, two of Orange Coast College’s Marine Mammal Research Group students observed an issue at Goff Island in Laguna Beach. Seeing high levels of human activity within wildlife habitat and harbor seal stress display behavior, they hypothesized a potential correlation.

Earlier this year, they analyzed that data and in May of 2025, they presented their findings to the Southern California Academy of Sciences and at the Giles T. Brown research symposium where they earned 1st place in oral presentations.

Their conservation effort continues, having grown into a research and monitoring program currently training volunteers and developing a photo-based ID catalog of Goff’s seals. Their mission is to inspire respect for harbor seal habitat at Goff Island and reduce harbor seal stress levels. This conservation effort is crucial in maintaining the kelp forests that contribute to a healthy ocean.

Our Topic for November is Giving Thanks:

“Let us raise our glasses to gratitude—because without it, we’d just be complaining with wine. Today, we give thanks for stretchy pants, for relatives who only mildly annoy us, and for food so good it makes us forget we promised to start that diet tomorrow. To the cooks who didn’t burn anything, the guests who brought wine instead of drama, and the dishwasher who’s about to face the real battle—cheers to surviving the holidays with humor, heart, and a whole lot of carbs!”
